Why do we need to see your driver’s license, passport or other forms of government-issued ID? It proves that you are really you! By matching an ID to the person standing in the bank, we can prevent fraud and protect our customers’ funds.
Here are the most common situations where you will need to show your ID:
Cashing a check
Even though a check is made out to you, you will need to show an ID with your photo and signature to cash the check. This shows us that you are the rightful recipient to obtain the cash. Cashing a check for the wrong person causes inconveniences for both the check writer and the intended recipient.
If the check is made out to your spouse, make sure that they endorse it before you take it to the bank.
Opening a bank account
Opening a bank account for the first time is a simple process but having all the necessary documents prepared beforehand makes it even easier! You must show a government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport. You will also need to provide your Social Security card and proof of address.
What if my bills are paperless?
To provide proof of address if you pay your bills online, you can print out a billing statement from your online account or provide a recent mortgage statement or a signed lease agreement.
What if I don’t have a driver’s license?
Not everyone drives, but there are still several types of government-issued ID that banks will accept. You can visit your local department of motor vehicles (DMV) and apply for a state-issued ID. Unlike a driver’s license, you don’t need to pass a driving test to get one. You just have to provide your birth certificate or valid passport and proof of address to receive a state-issued ID.
Other forms of ID include a valid passport or a U.S. military identification card.
